Free Attractions for Yom Ha'Atzmaut!

Tuesday, May 2, 2017, is Yom Ha'Atzmaut, and this year, in honor of 69 yrs of the State of Israel, more than 69 attractions around the country will open to the public at no charge.

The list on this page represents many hours of work translating and researching, and I request that if you want to share this information, you link to this blog post. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Check it out and find a place you've never gone to, and go have fun! In past years we've gone to museums that were free on Yom Haatzmaut, and they was almost completely empty. I think many Israelis prefer their mangal in the park and sitting in traffic. I prefer free admission!

I'm sure there are other places that are offering free programs or free admission, that I haven't heard of, so please add information for other places in the comments, or send a note to ester@kosherfrugal.com and I'll add it in! Thank you.

I have tried, wherever possible, to link to websites in English. There were a few museums/historical sites that only had Hebrew websites, though. My apologies in advance. If you find a broken or incorrect link, please email me at ester@kosherfrugal.com so I can take care of it! Thanks!

Have a wonderful Yom Ha'atzmaut. May it bring us closer to the Geulah Sh'laymah!

So, let me know where you'll be going! Just leave a comment below this post. It's a good idea to confirm in advance that the place you plan to go will be open as posted. Some places require advance bookings even if not specified.

If you need wheels for Yom Ha'atzmaut, check out this great deal for just 69nis per day!

Be sure to find me on Facebook and stay up to date about great Israeli free and frugal living ideas!

Surplus lettuce, cabbage, and celery

According to a WhatsApp notice going around, Moshav Talmei Yehiel (Kiryat Malakhi region) has a surfeit of lettuce, cabbage, and celery. It would cost them more to harvest it than they would get paid for their produce, so if you're in the area, you may want to check it out.

Call 054-577-8932 for details.

Have fun picking veggies if you go!

If you want to know more about my iHerb addiction, check out this post from last year, where I talk about my reasons for buying from iHerb!

U-pick Carrots (and pay what you want)

One carrot grower from Moshav Tzofit is inviting the public to his carrot fields to harvest the carrots he's grown. The market price he's been offered would not offset the cost of paying to harvest the carrots, so now thru Tuesday he's opening his fields to the public for self-picking.

Pick as much as you want, and pay what you want to pay for it. The farm is located near Kfar Sava on Road 5503.

It will be open to the public between the hours of 8:30am and 4pm (thru Tuesday).

Have fun picking carrots!

Updated Pesach Brownie Recipe (gluten free, pareve)

Brownies are a pesach staple in my house. There seems to always be a pan of them waiting for someone to inhale.

Here's how we make them:

(This makes 3 smallish square brownie pans if you like them thin. You could make them thicker and do 2 pans. All of my Pesach recipes are "for a crowd" - my apologies to those who don't cook in large quantity. Feel free to adjust as needed.)

6 eggs, beaten
1 cup oil
2 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla
Mix well.
Add:
1.5 cups cocoa powder
1 cup potato starch
1/2 tsp baking powder
pinch of salt
chocolate chips (I used half a bag because I'm careful with my chocolate chips)
nuts if you like (I make them without nuts.)

Mix well, with a wooden spoon.
Pour into baking pans and bake at 325 F (165 C) for 20-25 min
Enjoy!

Note: this recipe needs some adjusting if you are doing higher altitude baking. I developed it when I lived more or less at sea level. Now that we're a bit higher up, I bake it for less time.
