Setting up a dorm room

This post contains affiliate links. If you click on a link and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission, but it will never be at an additional cost to you!

Dorm supplies. Isn't it so much fun to have a child heading off to a dorm? Really, it's great that they're starting to spread their wings and taking that first step towards not living in their parents' home anymore. Right?

Don't get me wrong, I miss my kids who don't live at home full time! A lot! But I also know that it's time for them to figure out their next stages. And that's exciting!

When our first kid moved out, we helped him out with some of the basics. From a down blanket for cold Jerusalem nights, to pots and pans and potholders... And I think we even may have helped him find a Shabbat urn!

If you're helping someone setting up a dorm room or a student apartment, you probably want to focus on keeping your costs down and making sure the supplies you get are easy to move (they tend to move frequently) and can be rearranged if needed. I like modular storage units (like this 9-cube one, or this 15-cube one). And for hanging and other storage, I've seen lots of people opting for fabric closets with poles (this one is smaller, and this one is also a great price).

If you can install things onto the walls, this folding desk and this folding table set (includes two chairs) are great space savers!

Dorm sheets - I prefer 100% cotton sheets, and I've found some super low cost sets!

I also equipped my students with a spare mattress so they'd be able to let a sibling/cousin/friend crash if needed! We went with inflatable mattresses because when they're not being used, they take up very little space. I recommend one that comes with a pump or has a built-in pump.

Of course there's always more to buy, but I managed to get some stainless steel flatware someone was giving away, and since it was all stainless steel, it was easy to kasher! I also let my kids just help themselves to our overflowing collection of mugs and coffee cups. You don't actually have to buy everything brand new!

Let me know what your best tips are, or if you're looking for something in particular!

I hope this helps some of you out there!

Please share this information with your friends and family who may benefit from it!

iHerb is one of my favorite ways to find products that I can't get in Israel. Or products that may be available in Israel, but at inflated prices.

Need some ideas for your iHerb order?

Here are just a few things I recommend - several of these are eligible for the extra discount! I'd love to hear what your favorites are:

Teas

Witch Hazel Toner

Vitamin E Moisturizing Cream

Plant-based (coconut milk based) Caramel

Hand Sanitizer (great size for your bag!)

Lip balm

Concentrated Laundry Detergent

Unscented Compostable Dryer Sheets

Witch Hazel Cleansing Pads

Stridex acne control pads

Cocoa Butter Lotion

Dental Floss

Pain Relief Cream (herbal) (the athletes in my house like this one a lot)

Aspercreme pain relief products (conventional)

Makeup Remover

Aquaphor

Scar gel

Maple Syrup Granules

Made Good Granola Bars (allergy friendly!)

Cheddar Cheese Powder

Your order of $60 and up will usually qualify for FREE Global Air Locker shipping!

Don't forget these important, basic principles of shopping online from Israel:

  • Keep your order under $75 to avoid paying VAT!!
  • Spread out your orders. If you want to buy more than $75 worth of items from one website, and you have the option of splitting your order - DO IT. BUT don't order more than $75 worth on any given day to the same shipping name/address/ID. If you do, customs may combine your orders and charge you. Give it about 3 days between orders. Best to ship to a different name using a different ID for customs, so you can order it all on the same day.
  • Always look for the free shipping option - usually, it's to a pickup spot.

I love to see how close to $75 I can get without going over, and get free delivery to maximize savings while avoiding import taxes!

Enjoy and happy savings!

SimpleTax - US taxes for expats in Israel

this post contains affiliate links. If you click on a link and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Americans in Israel, this is for you!

If you're an American ex-pat like me, you probably get an annual headache when thinking about filing your US tax return. What an absolute pain, am I right?

But look at that! It's June, and it's time to deal with your US taxes if you're among those people who can't get out of it 😜. For Israelis who file US taxes, 2025 US tax paperwork is due September 15, I believe.

Currently, this is something most of us MUST do, even if we don't like it. There's just no getting around it for now - no matter how much we complain (maybe one day it will change!). And because of the complexity of navigating tax documents issued to comply with Israeli tax law (as opposed to US tax law), it is usually NOT recommended to use automated software for filing your overseas tax return.

But now there's SimpleTax - create an account, upload your documents, fill in some information, and their staff will take over from there!

SimpleTax will usually save you money on fees compared to other services. This is a game changer.

If your taxes are complicated, you'll still pay a higher rate than the lowest one listed on their site, but it will most likely still be MUCH lower than the quotes I've gotten from accountants recently.

I invite you to find more details at SimpleTax. If you use my referral link (the links to SimpleTax on this site are referral links), you'll get 10% off your first tax return! If for some reason you can't open the link, simply copy-paste this link to go to their site: https://simpletax.co.il/register?referral=KOFRU. Or go to their site on your own and be sure to enter my referral code (KOFRU).

So spread the word that this year, we'll all be doing our taxes smarter and cheaper! Use my referral code to get a great 10% discount:
MY-CODE: KOFRU

SimpleTax is also on Facebook and has plans to help US citizens in Israel navigate financial issues better. You can be sure I'll be following them and waiting for more helpful developments.

Prices vary by variety, but after the discount, some are as low as 61 NIS per KILO of coffee beans! This is a deal to grab if you make coffee at home (and I imagine if you're here, you're inclined to make coffee more than buy it at a coffee shop!)

I am not responsible for pricing errors or anything on the website the links take you to. I do not work for them, I just share deals!

Grocery Savings

If you've found your way here, chances are you're trying to figure out how to lower your grocery bill in Israel.

I'm going to try to share some helpful tips and tricks!

I live in a small town and we don't have lots of options for supermarkets. We have the following stores within walking distance of our house:

Machsanei HaShuk (not a huge one)

3 Makolets (2 are owned by the same person)

1 Fruit and Vegetable Store

(and several "Russian Makolets" I don't go to)

We have the option of driving a few minutes to a Shufersal

And we have the option of ordering groceries online from Shufersal or Rami Levy.

I've discovered that the way I spend the least money is by maximizing my ability to do small shops on the different sale days at our local stores, OR by buying from Rami Levy online once in while, especially if I can snag a free delivery deal (they have them every so often)!

Here's the thing I discovered today, when I went to Machsanei HaShuk for their Tuesday Dairy Sales (I only sometimes buy their Tuesday Meat Sales - depends if they're good enough!) - I walked thru the produce section, which I often ignore on Tuesday, knowing that Wednesday is Produce Sale Day. And you know what I discovered?

A fair number of vegetables were priced at 2.90/kilo, which is LOWER than the price they will be sold for tomorrow on Produce Sale Day!

I saw onions, sweet potatoes, eggplants, carrots, yellow peppers, and red peppers ALL for 2.90/kg! And I decided to buy them, except for the onions, as I am fairly certain that they won't be available for anywhere close to that price tomorrow or Thursday!

Follow up: I checked the sale announcement later in the day. Tomorrow's sale prices have Carrots for 3.90/kg, Eggplant for 5.90/kg, Sweet Potatoes for 6.90/kg, and Yellow Peppers for 6.90/kg, so I'm glad I got them for 2.90! I did see some decent prices on some of the fruit I would consider buying, so if I have time for a 10 minute stop at the store tomorrow, I'll probably get some fruit that's on sale.

UPDATE: I checked on Wednesday, and the items that were 2.90 yesterday were STILL 2.90 today! I'm still glad I bought them yesterday, though, so I didn't have to carry it all home today!

I know that 2 of our local makolets (the two owned by the same person) have produce sales on Monday and Thursday. Lately I can get onions there for 1.90/kilo so I skipped the 2.90 onions, and I'm planning a quick stop at the Makolet on Thursday for their chicken sale that runs Wednesday and Thursday, onions for 1.90 if still available, and potatoes for 2.50 if still available (the sales do change from time to time, so I can't be certain what the price will be).

One of those 2 makolets also has a "produce markdown rack" where everything on the rack is 2 shekels/kg or per package. It's pretty hit or miss but I'm always happy to get bananas and apples from their for turning into muffins or apple crisp.

I checked the specialty fruit and vegetable store, and while it's not nearly as expensive as similar stores in Tel Aviv, I haven't shopped there.

Every once in a while, I'll find myself enticed to stop into Shufersal, but generally, it's pricey. They do sometimes have worthwhile sales in the produce section, though!

Anyway, what's the upshot here?

I recommend exploring your options in order to find out how you'll get the best deal on the foods you tend to buy. If you only have time for one grocery shop a week, you're going to want to figure out which one comes out cheapest overall for your typical list, but I guarantee it won't be cheapest for every item on your list. If you have time for a few small shopping trips, try to take advantage of sales and specials and plan which store is the place to buy what!

So the upshot here is: I buy fruits and vegetables from Machsanei HaShuk and the makolets, I buy dairy sales and price controlled cheese and eggs from Machsanei Hashuk, and I buy chicken from the makolet with the chicken sales unless I find an amazing sale at a supermarket. I usually order spelt flour, pasta, rice, and other dry and canned goods in a once a month Rami Levy order. And I also occasionally find myself buying spices, vinegar and baking soda in kilo bags, and sometimes other baking supplies from a store in the shuk in Teverya that delivers here every few weeks.

I hope this helps get you thinking about what strategies you might want to use to keep your grocery bills down. I'd love to hear your best tips, too!

Replace your old 2G/3G "dumbphone" now - before it stops working!

This post contains affiliate links. This means that if you click on a link and make a purchase, I may receive a commission, but never at any additional cost to you.

Picture of 4 old cellphones
Image from the public domain

This is important for people who use older non-smartphones in Israel. The older cell networks (2G and 3G as far as I understood), are being RETIRED and will stop working. This means your phone will stop working if it uses those cell networks and not the newer ones. The bitter truth here is that means you will need to get a new phone if you want to have cell service.

So if you're set on keeping your status as a "non-smartphone user", I'm happy to share that you can currently get a "dumbphone" that works on the 4G network for under 200 NIS! If you prefer a flip-phone that can be had for under 225 NIS right now! Go get them now before they run out!

Of course, you can take this opportunity to upgrade to a smartphone if you prefer.

There are so many options, you can even find a Samsung phone in any price range starting at about 350 NIS! Hope this helps someone out there!

US expats: tax season is here and I have a discount for you

But now there's SimpleTax, have you heard of them? I've had a long chat with the founder of the company, and they've worked so hard to make this service available (it's designed to work in a way that standard tax software doesn't). Basically, you upload files and answer questions, and their team will put your tax return together for you for your approval.

SimpleTax will usually save you money on fees - I've gotten multiple quotes for taxes and almost all were much higher than Simpletax.

If your taxes are complicated, you will still pay a higher rate than the lowest one listed on their site, but it will most likely still be MUCH lower than the quotes I've gotten from accountants recently.

If you're here you probably shop online, right?
And you probably like to save money, right?

Cashdo - this cashback site is Israel-based. You can use it to get cashback at Superpharm online and Steimatzky, and other Israeli websites, including Lastprice, Delta, and Hamashbir and many more. Definitely worth checking out! I like this one because if you get your cashback as a Gift Card, they add a little extra!

Cashback.co.il -  Another Israel-based site. If you sign up now using this link, you'll get a 10 shekel bonus in your account! This site has a lot of Israeli websites available, and some international ones too.

Hope this helps you keep more money in your pocket!

Please bring your glasses if you just need new glasses with the same prescription as your old ones, OR if you have a written script for your new prescription, bring that in order to save time. If you don't have an up-to-date prescription, you can have an eye exam done there, but there may be a line. Children under 12 should bring their prescription.

Please note: Glasses are not made on the spot. You will receive a text message when they are ready to be picked up.

Hope this helps some of you out there!

iHerb is one of my favorite ways to find products that I can't get in Israel. Or products that may be available in Israel, but at inflated prices.

Right now, there's this sale:

Get 28% Off 400+ Trusted Brands with promo code 28ANNIV (also use Rewards code QEJ101 so I get referral credit 😄 ) - Just copy and paste them into your cart, one at a time, OR click here to load the discount into your cart automaticallyOffer is valid through the entire iHerb Anniversary Sale, ending 10/2/24 at 10:00 AM PT.

Need some ideas for your iHerb order?

Here are just a few things I recommend - several of these are eligible for the extra discount! I'd love to hear what your favorites are:

Teas

Lip balm

Specialty sea salt grinders

Witch Hazel Toner

Concentrated Laundry Detergent

Unscented Compostable Dryer Sheets

Witch Hazel Cleansing Pads

Stridex acne control pads

Cocoa Butter Lotion

Dental Floss

Pain Relief Cream (the athletes in my house like this one a lot)

Makeup Remover

Aquaphor

Maple Syrup Granules

Made Good Granola Bars

I was so excited when my order came to $74.64 after the discount was applied, and with free delivery! Talk about maximizing savings while avoiding import taxes! I hope you're just as successful!

Enjoy and happy savings!
