Subsidized Glasses

Residents of Northern Israel - it's back! Here's another chance to get a really affordable eye exam and glasses!

This week - Thursday, December 5, 2024 from 11:00AM - 7:00PM, you have a chance to get subsidized eye exams and glasses, this time at the Kinar Hotel in "Ulam Golan" (on the Kinneret). You'll be able to get a pair of glasses: frames + lenses - for just 150 shekels, and sunglasses for 50 shekels! Note: additional fees will be charged for complicated prescriptions, multifocals, etc (but will still be much less than the standard cost for these glasses).

FREE sunglasses are available for chayalim (no need for an ishur/asmachta)!

Please bring your glasses if you just need new glasses with the same prescription as your old ones, OR if you have a written script for your new prescription, bring that in order to save time. If you don't have an up-to-date prescription, you can have an eye exam done there, but there may be a line. Children under 12 should bring their prescription.

Please note: Glasses are not made on the spot. You will receive a text message when they are ready to be picked up.

Hope this helps some of you out there!

UPDATED INFO: Subsidized Glasses - NEW store hours!

I recently posted about the new year-round subsidized optical store: "Ezra Ba'Re'iyah"  inside Pitchon Lev in Karmiel.
Find them at HaLevona St #1, Karmiel. You can reach them by phone at 050-326-7501

They've changed their hours of operation, so I'm posting the new hours HERE. In any case, it's good to call before you go, to verify that places are open - sometimes things change and websites don't get updated.

Opening hours are:
Sun: 12:00 - 7:00pm
Mon - Thurs: 10:00am - 4:00pm
Fri: 9:00am - 2:00pm

You'll be able to get a pair of glasses (standard frames + standard lenses!) for just 100 shekels! Sunglasses are 50 shekels! Specialty lenses are subsidized on a different scale (multifocals, for example, will cost 600nis and transition lenses for most prescriptions will cost 300nis - still a really awesome deal! My high index lenses cost an extra 200nis, the cost varies by exactly what you need), and some frames are a bit more expensive, but still affordable.

Additional subsidies may be available. If you cannot afford your glasses, please ask at the store about additional subsidies.

Please note: Glasses are not made on the spot, as far as I know.

Hope this helps some of you out there! There's been a lot of discussion about the cost of glasses lately!

Be sure not to miss out on more ways to save money - find me on Facebook!

Subsidized Eye Exams are Back!

UPDATE:
I just received a message from someone who went to this event, and was told his glasses would cost 600nis, not 100nis.
I'm not sure what's going on there, so if anyone else has had similar experiences at these events, please be in touch!
I would not want to mislead anyone. I personally am not affiliated with these organizations - I simply posted info from a press release I received.
So if you've gone to one of these events, please let me know what your experience there was!

UPDATE: When I inquired, one of the organizers told me that multifocal lenses cost 600nis, because they are such expensive lenses to begin with. This is still a HUGE subsidy. (It is possible that some other specialty lenses would also fall into the 600nis category, I didn't get all the details.)

Reminder - this discount is still valid! Take advantage of it while you can - expires SOON!

Home Care Optical came into being a little over a year ago. Originally, the owner planned to provide a service for the elderly/homebound population, but he quickly realized that many others also prefer the convenience of an at-home service with flexible hours.

How my boys got free glasses in under an hour

My boys both wear glasses. Not surprising, as I am severely myopic.

Both boys have been reminding me for several months that it's been over a year since they had their eyes checked. One said he couldn't see out of his glasses at all, and then, he even managed to break his glasses in half at the bridge just to prove his point! And this did, in fact, motivate me to check out my options. Buying glasses in this country, frankly, scares me. It's just so notoriously expensive, and I wasn't sure what to do...

BUT, I remembered that If you have Clalit Platinum, you can take your child (up to age 18) to any participating optician and get 600 shekels toward a new pair of glasses. In many cases, this amounts to free glasses.

I decided to go in Teverya (there are no participating opticians in Katzrin), as we had plans to be there on Friday anyhow. In the interest of saving time, I went to "Shimshon" because it was the closer of the two to where we'd parked (at my husband's workplace). We walked in, and found the store to be relatively crowded for such a small place of business.

But, to my surprise, within 5 minutes, an optician was taking down our insurance information, checking the boys' glasses for their latest prescription information, and getting testing underway. She convinced the optometrist to check them next. Then, when she saw how much the prescription for my younger son had changed, she convinced the staff to get these glasses done in time to take them home for Shabbat!

It was AMAZING. We walked in there around noon, and walked out at 12:50 pm with two new pairs of glasses, anti-reflective coatings and all, AND ZERO pressure to get upgrades, with no out of pocket payment whatsoever.

I'm thrilled, and my boys were also incredibly surprised that they got such stellar service!

Goggles4U ships to Israel for $9.95

Buying glasses online has become a really popular option here in Israel. For many, this offers the only way to buy affordable prescription glasses. I know that once I was quoted a price of 2000 shekels for my glasses, and that scared me off from buying new glasses for at least a year longer than I should have waited!

I know, that sounds crazy. And it probably wasn't my best decision, but I was dealing with multiple issues and my eye doctor actually recommended waiting a little while if I could manage. So I waited as long as I could.

In the end I bought new glasses for about 400 shekels a few months ago here in Israel, which is very good for thin lenses for high prescriptions, with astygmatism correction and anti-reflective coatings...

$8.99 Discount EyeglassesBut I know that I may have gotten a better deal had I shopped online, although I must admit, shopping online for high index lenses with all the requirements I have was actually not so cheap when I checked at some point.

However, there may be another place for me to check next time! I've just discovered another website that ships glasses to Israel - Goggles4U offers $8.99 Glasses w/ Coated Lenses, and international shipping starts at $9.95

So, if you are buying glasses online, be sure to check out Goggles4!
