Rosh Hashana Challah!

This is our Rosh Hashana challah. It's sweet and honey gives it a special flavor. This year we've noticed honey is more expensive than ever before, so I tried to modify the recipe and use a little less in order to help my kilo of honey go further.

Whole Spelt Honey Challah

8 cups whole spelt flour, sifted (or 4 c. white + 4 c. whole)
1 cup oat bran  
1 T. salt  
2/3 cup sugar

2 tsp dry yeast
1/3 cup honey 

2-2.5 cups of lukewarm water*  
1/3 cup oil + a little more for oiling the bowl (I use sunflower oil most of the time)

Optional: 1 cup raisins (or chocolate chips for the non-traditional folk like my kids)

 *I find that the amount of water needed varies a lot - depends on the temperature and humidity in my kitchen on a particular day, and different batches of flour behave differently

Directions: 

1. Mix together dry ingredients (flour, oat bran, salt, sugar, yeast)

2. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add liquid ingredients (honey, oil, water). Mix well. Then knead. 

3. Coat the dough with a little extra oil and flip over a couple of times, so the bottom and sides get oiled too. cover with a tea towel to rise till doubled. On warm days, this can be about 1 hour, but can take up to 2 hours. Sometimes I leave it longer and it's fine, since there are no eggs.

 
4. Punch down, add raisins (or chocolate chips) if you like, knead again, and shape your challot. Cover with a tea towel to rise for about 1/2 an hour. (I usually make 3 challot out of this size batch, so I often double it!) These make great "pull-apart" challot in a round pan, which I find are much less work than braided round challot, and everyone loves them. Sometimes I brush the tops with honey or sugar mixed with some hot water before baking. You can do an egg wash (or egg and sugar) on them if you prefer that they get shiny, if you're not avoiding eggs.
 
5. Bake for 25-30 min at 220C

Allow to cool before you devour them.

These got a bit dark, but they are delish.

Shop the sales! (Grocery savings)

 For Israeli families, grocery bills represent a large percentage of their monthly spending.

And since food prices are typically on the rise, I thought I'd start sharing grocery deals again when I find them! 

So today, I was shopping at Rami Levy online.

And here's the thing - chicken was suddenly marked down! Yes, I had started to look yesterday, but suddenly today the prices went down. Maybe this happens more often than I realized?

I don't know, but either way, here are the chicken deals I found there today:

That is:

Chicken Wings: 5 NIS/kg

Chicken Thighs and Drumsticks: 14.90 NIS/kg

Chicken Thighs: 19.90 NIS/kg

Chicken Breast: 22.90 NIS/kg

Clearly I bought the first two - they limit you to 3 kg per item, so I ordered 3kg of wings and 3 kg of thighs + drumsticks.

There were also some decent prices for produce - so we picked up potatoes, onions, and purple cabbage for 1.90 NIS/kg, tomatoes and cucumbers for 2.90 NIS/kg, and a bag of avocadoes for 4.90 NIS/kg (but since I ordered that price seems to have jumped back up to over 15 NIS/kg). It's definitely worth checking for sales on Mondays and Tuesdays at Rami Levy online.

We love puzzles. How to find affordable ones - since I don't want to pay 100 NIS per puzzle!

Do you love puzzles as much as we do? We wanted to update our puzzle collection but discovered that buying them locally is a little bit prohibitive. So, of course, we had to find an alternative!

Here are a bunch of gorgeous puzzles I found that are priced well, and at the time of posting, all of the following products were well-priced and were eligible for free shipping to Israel with a $49 purchase:

Just remember - you can avoid VAT and other import fees by staying below the $75 tax threshold for any single order! If you do go over, as you will if you're buying a computer, you will see exactly what you'll pay in taxes at checkout. I only do this if I'm actually buying a product that costs more than $75. And I don't add any other small things to these orders, because once you're over, you're over and you'll pay fees on the entire order.

For smaller purchases, I place separate orders that each total under $75.

If you're in the USA and buying a gift for someone in Israel, please follow those guidelines, too - or be prepared to prepay all taxes and fees. Dance Finds on Aliexpress

Dance. Our teenage daughters love to dance, and take a LOT of dance classes.

It gets expensive, and while I can't help you cut corners on the class tuition, I figured I would share some links that have allowed us to pick up dancewear for a little less.

Sometimes you just can't cut corners - I don't buy off-brand pointe shoes, for example. But other times, there might be great ways to save. 

One of my daughters really likes these split-sole ballet shoes from DayDance! Click here to check them out! NOTE: they run pretty much true to size - but remember that dancers' feet usually swell a bit when they're warmed up, so be sure to measure when they are warmed up.

Our favorite place to buy softer, romantic look tutus and lyrical dresses is Thank Frank's Aliexpress store. For the price, the quality is AMAZING.

We bought this one from them when we first discovered Thank Frank, and no one believed that it cost less than $50 USD! 

(It is priced slightly higher now, but what hasn't gone up lately?)

This pretty blue peasant dress has seen several competitions already, and it's holding up really well!

For the classic tutu look (pancake style/platter style), we really had a hard time finding a discount seller. But in the end we discovered All For Dance. This seller sells so many dance costumes - and we chose a pre-professional tutu that truly exceeded our expectations! It was actually prettier in real life than in the picture below.

We've got our eyes on a few other dance costumes from All For Dance, like this white romantic tutu.

And if you need a lyrical dress, there are some nice options here too. Like this purple one with sequins, or this white one (one of my girls wore this one to a performance).

We also try to get convertible tights for a lot less than the standard price in dancewear stores. So if you just really can't fathom spending 40 NIS on a pair of tights, be aware that you CAN get THREE pairs for the same amount! Here are the tights that we bought:
