Updated list of price controlled foods/maximum prices

It's now "after the chagim", the time of year we all decided we would reign in our spending, since during the chagim that seemed to be nearly impossible. I guess that's why there's been a lot of chatter and questions lately about how to find out what foods are price controlled here in Israel, what the maximum prices are, and what to do if you find that a store is charging above the maximum.
Here's a quick rundown of what you need to know:

The price listed is the MAXIMUM price for the specified item - in theory, a store can discount it further, if they want to, but there was some talk out there about that being unfair to the competition (in my opinion, it's a free market. The store can choose their loss leader...)...

If a store is selling price controlled items for a higher price, they are in violation of the law. You can (and should) report these violations.

Here are the items that are supervised, and their maximum price to consumers:

I'm showing prices for the entire country, excluding Eilat, by the way. Eilat is exempt from Ma'am, so prices there will be lower.

Lechem Achid (I believe this is about 65% whole grain) - 750g loaf, 5.11
White bread, 750g loaf, 5.11
Challah or yeast cake, 500g, 5.58 (don't ask me what kind of yeast cake this is referring to, I have no idea!)
Lechem Achid, sliced and packaged, 750g, 7.67
White bread, sliced and packaged, 500g, 6.82
Regular Kitchen Salt, Fine Kitchen Salt, Fine Table Salt, and Coarse Table salt, 1 kg, 2.09
3% milk, 1 liter, bag, 5.28
1% milk, 1 liter, bag, 4.95
3% milk, 1 liter, carton, 6.54
1% milk, 1 liter, carton, 6.11
Eshel, 4.5% fat, 200ml, 1.66
Gil, 3% fat, 200ml,  1.52
Sour Cream, 15% fat, 200ml, 2.47
Butter, regular, 100g, 4.08
Emek Cheese (at the cheese counter),per kg, 45.96
Gilboa Cheese (at the cheese counter), per kg, 43.72
XL eggs, regular, 1 dozen, 14.00
  L eggs, regular, 1 dozen, 12.90
M eggs, regular, 1 dozen, 11.90

In addition, soon Gevinah Levanah and Whipping Cream are supposed to be added to this list.

If you see a store charging higher prices, you can report them to the regional supervisor.

And for those wondering, a while back the Ministry of Finance decided that Badatz milk products are also price regulated products, so stores cannot be charging more for the Badatz-supervised milk, leben, butter, sour cream, and Emek and Gilboa cheese!

Do you ever see stores overcharging? Have you ever made a report to the supervisory board?

Sukkot Menu

I'm sick. My airways have closed up in response to a regular ol' cold I caught from my daughter. She had this cold - fever, stuffy nose, sore throat for a few days last week (started Thursday) but she was all better by Sunday.

On Tuesday it hit me. I woke up at 3 a.m. with fever and a sore throat. I was hoping that it wouldn't progress, but it has set off my asthma... so I'm trying to rest up, take lots of asthma meds and stay optimistic.
a corner of our sukkah. (a problematic corner)

So this chag menu will be more of the same. EASY foods.

Here goes:

Whole Wheat Honey Challot (from the freezer)
Super Garlicky (forgive me, please, kids!) vegetable soup for healing
Oven fried chicken
Corn on the Cob (got our hands on some super sweet organic corn and I haven't found a ton of bugs)
Apple crisp (my girls will make that)
Roasted Summer Squash
Roasted Red Peppers
Lentils with sauteed onions
Brown Rice
Salad with honey-cinnamon oranges (the oranges we were able to get are still quite tart) for some extra vitamin C
Dessert: grapes, and a chocolate chip cake from the freezer
Snacks: popcorn, watermelon and these honey cinnamon roasted chickpeas I've been wanting to try...

Chag Sameyach to all of you!
What are making for chag?

Computer Gemach

This is a guest post by Shmuel Meyer. Please take a few moments to read about his wonderful computer gemach service! You can reach Shmuel at shmuel@meyer-services.com, or call him at 02-5862017. -Ester

The Computer Gemach
I have been an independent computer consultant since 1987. Over 15 years ago, I saw that my clients didn't have what to do with their used computers after they upgraded. I started to gather used systems and parts and put together working computers.

These refurbished computers are then donated to needy individuals and organizations. This includes people who are trying to get on their feet financially, sick children and various charity organizations.

The gemach (Hebrew for "acts of kindness") is just a one man operation. It is not a registered charity. That simply costs too much. I have been funding everything from my own pocket with very little help until now.

However, I cannot continue alone. I need your help.

There is a need for what I am doing. People are always asking for help. There is no
bureaucracy here. People explain their situation and I try to help.

A side benefit is that it helps the ecology by keeping computers out of landfills.

I am seeking funds mainly to pay the rent on the small work and storage space that I use.

I am also trying to add 3 new projects to the gemach:
1) A lending library of computer books.
2) A lending library of software to learn computer related topics.
3) Lending of laptops for hospitalized people.

I have made appeals in the past. I usually get offers of a couple of computers. Sometimes the donor actual gives me the computer. But usually even that falls through...

You can find out all about my gemach on my website. Please check it out! In addition, I have created a fundraising campaign on Indiegogo. Please take a look at it and help out!

If you have any questions or need any further information, please
be in touch.

Banana Coconut Oat Bran Muffins

I was hanging around my house in the crazy heat today, feeling like my brain was fried. I just wanted to go to sleep.

So I got myself up and into the kitchen, threw the window wide open (just hoping it would bring a cool breeze), and baked some muffins. They smell amazing so if they don't get eaten NOW, they'll be part of our break the fast meal after Yom Kippur!

This recipe came about because I didn't have much sifted flour left on hand, and I had a LOT of mushy bananas (note to self: stop buying too many bananas!)

Banana Coconut Oat Bran Muffins

6 overripe bananas, mashed well
2/3 c. sugar
1/2 c. oil
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 T. ground flaxseed
1.5 - 2 c. water + 1 tsp vinegar (or whey from kefir cheese making, or you can use half water/half orange juice to give it an interesting extra flavor)

combine well.

Add:
1 cup whole wheat flour

1 cup wheat bran (finished off my stash)
1.5 cups oat bran 3/4 c. shredded coconut
1/2 tsp salt
 2 tsp baking powder
 Mix well

This makes 12 generous muffins.
Pour batter into muffin tin lined with paper cups. Bake at 350 F/175  C for 25-30 min

Menu Plan for the week

If I don't plan some menus immediately, we will have nothing to eat!
I'll easily get overwhelmed by all the tasks I have to take care of, our new schedule, which includes chugim (special activities) at supper time nearly every evening, etc...

So... no promises that I'll completely stick to this plan, but it's better to have a plan than NOT to have a plan.

I'll start with Monday this week, since it's already Monday!

OH... and I'm only planning supper. Not sure what we'll be doing about lunches, but at least we'll have a supper plan.

(Can you tell I'm still feeling a little topsy-turvey from the move?)

Monday: Tomato soup with rice, fresh rolls, salad

Tuesday: Pancakes, scrambled eggs, salad, yogurt

Wednesday: Lentil patties served on rolls, oven-fries, salad

Thursday: Pea Soup (not split pea soup), Roasted Carrots, Some sort of Casserole

Here's hoping  we can get back into some sort of daily and weekly rhythm!
