Today's discussion: BUGS that come inside!

This post contains affiliate links. This means that if you click on a link and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission, at no additional cost to you! Thanks for your support!

Some people have been asking about ways to keep bugs out of their houses without an exterminator! It's one of those facts of life in Israel and other hot climates - bugs come indoors.

So here are my favorite tips:

USE Cockroach gel! (Apply following the instructions on the package and it's safe and effective)

You can buy cockroach gel in really small tubes in most stores that sell garden supplies and hardware stores (I've also seen them at places like Maxstock). OR you can buy a 4-pack of larger tubes for about the same price!

Here's one I found on Amazon: Invict gold cockroach gel

I also think it's a good idea to put out Glue traps. This will let you know at a glance if you need to be more agressive with your insecticides since often the bugs that come into our house are most active when we're sleeping.

I've found some glue traps sold locally but I like this 10-pack I found on Amazon for less than $2 a trap: Glue traps for insects

For ants, I find that Terro often helps, but it's not sold in Israel, as far as I know. Click here to see Terro Ant bait

If you have a serious ant problem, you can also buy ant gel. This 6-pack sold is a particularly good deal: Raid Ant gel

Sometimes nothing beats old-fashioned solutions - don't forget that fly paper can really help: 20-pack of sticky fly paper

Amazon's prices change frequently but they're really great about letting you know if an item in your cart has changed price - so if you found one and deliberated about it, you'll know if something changed when you decide to complete your purchase. I hope you find the right mix to keep your home more comfortable without a contract with an exterminator!

Just remember - you can avoid VAT and other import fees by staying below the $75 tax threshold for any single order! If you do go over, as you will if you're buying a computer, you will see exactly what you'll pay in taxes at checkout. I only do this if I'm actually buying a product that costs more than $75. And I don't add any other small things to these orders, because once you're over, you're over and you'll pay fees on the entire order.

For smaller purchases, I place separate orders that each total under $75.

If you're in the USA and buying a gift for someone in Israel, please follow those guidelines, too - or be prepared to prepay all taxes and fees. You'll see them before you checkout, so don't worry about surprises. You will need to enter the recipient's ID number at checkout too, so the package can clear customs.

Hope you found this helpful! If yes, be sure to find me on Facebook and join my shopping groups (here and here)!

Bugs in Israel: Time to deal with the bug situation!

This post contains affiliate links. So if you click on a link here I may receive a small commission but it won't cost you any extra! Thank you!

It's that time of year when some of us find the bug situation in Israel a little overwhelming.

It's a hot climate, and many places in the country are muggy. And you know what? That means bugs love this country! So much! All kinds of creepy-crawly things that we desperately want to keep out of our homes are just hiding away, waiting for their chance to take over.

It is really really hard to keep our Israeli homes bug-free but I thought maybe I could help a bit, after having lived through several traumatic bug infestations in my house.

Here are some of the most useful products I've found:

Sticky boards you hang up to catch flying bugs. I buy them at Max Stock in a pack of 10 or so (they are sticky on both sides) for about 10/11 NIS. Or you can buy them from eBay here!

Pantry Pest/Moth Traps - these are a must for every pantry. Stop an infestation quickly if you have these in the pantry already! Click here to shop for them on eBay!

Cockroach Gel - Advion Gel is the best one out there. It works. So much better than anything else, and it's fume-free. Just put out a few dots about 4 times a year. It's the best. Click here to shop for this on eBay!

Ants. We know how quickly they can take over! The simplest and least toxic solution is Terro. Unfortunately, I have NEVER found it or similar for sale in Israel. So glad it's available on eBay too! Click here to find it on eBay!

That usually takes care of our issues!

If we find a cricket, we try to catch it and release it back outside. Same with spiders and geckos. But if you prefer, you can buy sticky traps and put them in the corners of your house to catch any random bug that finds itself there. They are non-toxic, so that's my preference. Here are some simple glue traps that are inexpensive.

I hope this post helps you!

Zomick's health violations

Ok, this is not about an Israeli product.

I just happen to have lots of relatives and friends and readers in the USA who are in the habit of buying challot. And I KNOW a lot of people do this... and a lot of people buy Zomick's challah.

So when I read this story about health violations at Zomick's plant, I felt like I needed to share it.

I have eaten Zomick's challah.

And I was not happy to hear about beetles in the cornmeal, rodent nests in the plant, mouse droppings in the flour bags... not to mention cockroaches and assorted other creepy crawlies were found.

Shudder.

Please family and friends, make time to bake some homemade Challah!! You'll be happy you did.

I have a great recipe here.

Sunday Night, Feb. 20, 2011

It's so gray and dreary out - looks like rain. I know we need the rain, and I'm looking forward to lots of it - I just prefer that it rain at night...

Anyhow, this rain is making me think of split pea soup - one of my favorites. And I just discovered another bag of split peas tucked into a corner of my freezer (yes, I keep all my grains and legumes and flours in the freezer (I have a BIG freezer!). A lesson learned in Texas after one too many bug infestations...).

Here's what we'll be eating tonight, keeping in mind all those foods I have to use up:

Split pea soup - onions, garlic, celery, and carrots sauteed in olive oil, cover the pot and cook over low for another 10 min. Add split peas and soup stock. Season to taste. Bring to a boil and then simmer for at least 1 hour, or till thoroughly cooked.

Pasta Alfredo with steamed broccoli

Roasted Onions, Tomatoes, and Zucchini with Basil - if this was just for me, I'd roast them all together. But I have to keep in mind the picky kids, and I'm actually going to roast each vegetable on its own. Then they can be eaten individually or mixed together. It's really not much extra work - just a couple of extra pans to wash, and if it gets the kids to eat, its worth it!

Chocolate Cupcakes (leftover from Shabbat!)

Are you working on clearing out your pantry yet? Please let me know!
