Homeschooling Deals!

Hi all!

I wanted to share a few of our homeschooling resources today! I know you don't all homeschool, but lately I have gotten a lot of questions from parents whose kids go to school - either about how they can also homeschool, or how they can enrich their children's education during non-school hours.

So I'm writing a really quick post for all of you - there is a lot I'm not going to be able to include here, but some of this should get you started! Here are some of the resources we use or recommend.

I wanted to get my kids reading more in Hebrew. Since my kids like science, I picked up a bunch of science mags in Hebrew. And I just discovered this one called Galileo Tzair that is specifically written for kids ages 7-15. It's a great way to introduce Science concepts AND strengthen Hebrew reading comprehension at the same time! (Sorry, the deal I had ended. Feel free to check back if it comes up again!)

Anytime you're looking for ideas for curriculum, free or not, I highly recommend checking out the Homeschool Buyer's Co-op. Many deals are online and can be purchased by anyone in the world. Other deals, that are physical materials, often require a US shipping address.

Educents also has great deals for homeschoolers and for enrichment programs. They often have great deals on certain books - like the Life of Fred series - but I do recommend comparing prices before you buy.

I also rely on our Kindles - we get lots of free books for it, as well as inexpensive books from Amazon! My kids are HUGE readers, so the kindles are often in use.

If you're homeschool students are ready to start studying at a college level, the Open University allows homeschoolers into their programs, though you will need to attend a guidance session and interview and convince them you're ready! Check it out today!

Every so often, we take a day to go to a Science Museum. MadaTech has Free Wednesdays still - though it's coming to an end soon. Check it out soon!

Food Recall

Ariel Bakery and the Ministry of Health have announced a recall of the following product:

Brand: Ma'afiyat Ariel (Ariel Bakery)
Product: Mozart Mousse
Size: 600g
Production Code: 7276
Expiration date: 01.02.18

The product is being recalled because it may be contaminated with listeria, which can be very dangerous to vulnerable populations. (I am guessing this is a decadent chocolate mousse cake - please correct me if I'm wrong!)

If you have purchased this product DO NOT EAT IT.
Please return it to the store where purchased for a refund or replacement.

Kashrut Warning - "Bakla Tzair"

It just came to my attention that at least 3 offices of the Rabbanut's Kashrut program have announced that there is a serious problem with infestation in certain frozen fish in Israel.

The fish is called "Bakla Tza'ir" and is one of the absolute cheapest fish you can buy in this country - so I'm sure there are frugalistas and frugalites out there who buy it regularly.

They are warning that the infestation with worms is pervasive, and they have told service providers that are under their kashrut that they cannot use this fish for the time being.

That's all I know! 

I will not be buying this fish for now (I have definitely bought it in the past, when in search of affordable fish!), so I thought I'd just share the info here, so everyone can make their own decisions about what to do!

I shop there pretty often, as you may already know. I find it makes life easier for me - not only do they make it easy to find some "hard to find" products my family needs (like fragrance free shower products), but I save a significant amount of money on things like vitamins and probiotics. They are definitely less expensive at iHerb than my local stores, and shipping can be VERY affordable, especially if you order "Shipping Savers".

Here are some of the things I like to buy at iHerb:

Palm Oil (this eco-friendly version is not available in Israel at all, and is perfect for making frosting or fudge)

Solgar supplements and vitamins are usually 50% less than in local stores.

Magnesium Tablets (these and many other supplements are quite pricey in Israel and iHerb is a great way to save!)

Stash Teas (I buy these when they are on sale, as the sale price comes out to less than the lowest price I can find herbal teas for locally, and these are just SO MUCH HIGHER quality than teas I can find for an affordable price!)

Vitamin D (so many people are deficient, it turns out! And my doctor prescribed a rather high dose, and what's sold here is very low dose and more expensive)

Probiotics are far less expensive from iHerb than any I've found in Israel, and they don't weigh much!

EO shower gel (we like this kid friendly all-in-one shower product that doesn't irritate our skin!)

Ricola throat drops (these work out to be only slightly less expensive than the local price, so I use them as a "filler" product, never as my "reason for buying")

Witch Hazel (it's really not easy to find witch hazel products in Israel, though there are a few pricey ones. If you love witch hazel, you'll be thrilled with iherb's price. This one is a toner with alcohol in it - some people like the alcohol in it, but if you don't, they also have plenty of no-alcohol witch hazel products)

Coffee Filters (unbleached) - I can find the #4 size locally, but I use the #2 size, and it's so easy to order it, rather than running around town!

Brown Rice Pasta (only when they're on sale, great for people who don't eat wheat! The local equivalent is more expensive unless there's an amazing sale)

Grapefruit Seed Extract (I checked out a similar product, 1/4 of the size, that cost more than twice as much at my health food store! Many people are convinced this extract keeps colds away!)

Essential Oils (I use them in homemade cleaners) - for a fraction of the price of the ones sold here in Israel! Yes, they are real and natural (and not an MLM - HUGE plus!)!

Soy-free Teriyaki Sauce (for my soy allergic child)

Calendula Cream (so soothing and wonderful for eczema!)

Aquaphor Ointment - impossible to buy locally! (The product that is considered "equivalent" is really not.)

I also regularly check the Specials Page to see if products I use are on sale and work out to a better deal thru iHerb during a sale, and I also occasionally will order a hard-to-find spice.
