It's time I got back to planning and cooking regularly for my family, as I no longer have good excuses not to! (They were: 1. We're moving soon. 2. We just moved and we're unpacking. 3. I don't have an oven)

Here's tonight's plan:

Broccoli puff (broccoli is a bit of a splurge but not so much that we can't have it once in a while) (broccoli, cottage cheese, shredded cheddar or other hard-style cheese, eggs, salt pepper, a bit of flour, all mixed up and baked in a casserole pan)

Make your own salad (we have lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and chick peas)

Baked potatoes 

Yogurt smoothies

Quick! No plan. It has just been too hot and I'm having a hard time getting back to cooking. A quick survey of available foods and here's what I fed the family tonight - no one starved.

Toasted Cheese sandwiches on the leftover Challah from Shabbat

Leftover pasta from yesterday
Watermelon

I am back in the business of cooking for my family! The oven is here, and is ready to use.

Here's our Shabbat menu (sorry, I ran out of time to write up recipes!):

Gezpacho
Some sort of Baked or Roasted Chicken
Roasted Potatoes
Roasted Vegetables (I had onions, green peppers, mushrooms, and tomatoes for this)
Corn Bread
Rice
Fresh Fruit
Chocolate Cake

I also made chocolate chip banana bread, for a Shabbat treat.

I ordered a washer and an oven last week, from a scratch and dent store in Haifa. I spent a fortune, but less than I would have at the regular store (yes, I surveyed the regular prices). And my husband bargained, which is a good thing. He's a much better bargainer than I am.

They were delivered this week, on Monday at the ridiculous time of 6:45 a.m., which did not ingratiate us with our neighbors. It was a large truck and we live on a tiny "simta" (best translated as "alley". It is one way and the truck barely fit on the street -  it couldn't turn into our driveway though, not enough swingroom). So the truck blocked the whole street for several minutes - 10, 12 tops. And of course, our neighbor needed to leave for work...

Thursday a technician came and installed our new appliances. We are now inaugurating them!
Here's the washer (it's already done several loads - what a difference to now have a 10 kg machine. I am thrilled!)

Coming Back Soon

I am so ready to get back to normal life! We have now been in our new house for two weeks and we're getting settled in. We are looking forward to plenty of excitement; we are part of an effort to build a new Dati Leumi community in Ramat Yishai. We have plenty of work cut out for us, and part of it will be hosting lots of people, looking for that right group of people who will join us here!

In order to be able to host all the potentials (not to mention all the visiting family coming to town for an upcoming Bar Mitzvah we'll be making), we ordered new guest beds, and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our new oven. It's supposed to be here at 6:45 a.m. and then we have to call a technician to install it for us. So, B'ezrat Hashem, I'll be back in the business of cooking meals for my family later this week!

I'm looking forward to getting back into some sort of routine, and I hope you'll join me as we get back to menu planning, frugal aliyah tips, and homeschooling fun!

Sorry I've gone missing

Hi everyone! I know it's been a while since I posted - side-effects of moving a family of 6 to a new home.

I'm hoping to resume my meal planning just as soon as I get my new pantry well stocked and buy an oven. Small tasks (ha ha).
Oh and while I'm at it, I need to get a washing machine!
So wish me luck, and when I'm on the other side of all this spending money, I'll be back to trying to figure out how to feed my family on a budget, hopefully with some time-saving tricks as well.
In the meantime, feel free to peruse the archives and let me know what you think! I always love to hear from ya'll! (Yes I can say Ya'll honestly. I lived in the south for a total of 14 yrs, 17 if you count S. Florida as south. I'm not so sure it qualifies.)
