(for illustrative purposes only)

Let's stay warm this winter with all things that ship FREE to Israel!

I've found that sometimes the Amazon deals are the PERFECT solution to finding what I'm looking for without traveling to multiple cities to check all the malls, AND if we do it right, we can get higher quality items and still save money!

Here are some of the options for getting through winter in Israel that I found with free shipping (although sometimes free shipping is limited to a certain size or color, so be sure to check carefully before you order):

Wool & Cashmere socks for women, 3-pack

Blue Fleece Zip Up Jacket or Pink Fleece Zip Up Jacket for kids (seriously, this is an unbeatable price)

Fleece-lined knitted wide headbands, 3-pack

Fleece-lined helmet liner for wearing under your cycling helmet

Lined ankle boots, for women

Lined waterproof boots, for women

Lined waterproof hiking boots, for men

Blanket hoodies! these are awesome. I wear them when it's just me at home and I don't want to run the heat.

Money Saving Ideas for Staying Warm

This post contains affiliate links. This means that if you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission, at no additional cost to you. Thank you for your support.

Winter's here, and that means we're all looking at spending more money staying warm. Israeli houses are definitely on the chilly side if we don't heat them, and we know heaters cost a lot to run. (But did you know that it almost always actually costs less to run your mazgan for one hour than to run a space heater for an hour?! Go figure!)

It all adds up fast - so I'm all for saving money but staying warm. I have a few tricks, but I'd love to hear yours too!

1. Don't boil the kettle all day long. Boil it in the morning and fill up a thermal carafe! That way you can have a hot drink as often as you like, all for the cost of boiling one kettle! I have a carafe similar to this one. I also have a larger one for when more people are around - this is the one I got. They last years and years, and are totally worth the investment.

2. Wear really warm socks. It makes such a difference. If you don't like wool socks, they sell all sorts of fuzzy socks all over the country (check Max Stock or similar!).

3. Warm up quickly with these instant heating pads - they're reusable and great for when you just need to get the chill out of your hands. Some people really like hot water bottles too. Just be careful - they do wear out and you don't want to get a burn if one fails.

4. Block drafts. I made a draft blocker for the bottom of one of my doors out of an old pair of sweatpants. I'm sure you can find something lying around that can easily be made into a draft blocker! For windows, I bought foam weather stripping tape and it helps!

5. We warm the bedrooms before going to sleep, but while we're sleeping, we use really great down comforters to stay warm. (They're even sometimes too warm for some of us.)

6. Hats. Several of my children wear hats all winter long (um, all summer long, too perhaps, but we don't need to go there today, do we?), and they tell me it really makes a difference and isn't just an old wives' tale. Apparently most of our body heat escapes via the top of our heads, so it makes sense that it works! I personally cannot wear a hat all day - I'd get a headache, but if this works for you, it's really helpful!

I'm sure there are many more tricks out there. Share your favorites in the comments! I'm looking forward to hearing your ideas!

Menu for the week

I would LOVE to be able to plan my weekly menu, but I am so low on fresh produce, I can only do a bare basics plan -- I'm going to have to fill it in more as the week goes on. Please leave a comment below with some ideas!

So here's what I've come up with so far:

Sunday: lunch - vegetable-noodle soup, muffins from the freezer
Supper - Split Pea Soup, Pasta, salad

Monday:
Lunch: leftover split pea soup,??
Supper - Tomato soup with rice, Tuna-Wakame patties (scrambled eggs for the kids who won't eat that), ??

Tuesday:
Lunch: Leftover tomato soup, sandwiches
Supper: Felafel

Wednesday:
Lunch: Pancakes, ???
Supper: Pizza, Roasted veggies?

Thursday:
Lunch: all the leftovers from the week
Supper: Pasta with ??

That should do it!

Pantry challenge menu for this week

We are pretty well stocked up at the moment, and I see no reason to go out and buy anything this week - especially with a cold winter storm on the way (with the exception of milk and a few fruits and veggies, which I plan to get today when I'm out (we're out of apples and carrots and down to only 2 bananas!). Although I reserve the right to stock up on something if there is a "can't miss" sale, but I haven't seen that yet, and I don't plan to do much running around...

So, we have plenty of legumes, rice, pasta, and most staples, and we even have a lot of veggies, either fresh or frozen. Here's what I came up with using the things I see I have on hand:

Monday:
Lunch: Pasta with tomato sauce and vegetables, (rice or baked potato for the kids who aren't feeling great)
Supper: Split Pea Soup, baked sweet potatoes, and fresh bread with spreads

Tuesday:
Lunch: Lentil and vegetable stew (leftover from Sunday), sandwiches if anyone wants, using Monday's bread
Supper: Vegetable soup with noodles, Rice, Black bean "burgers"

Wednesday:
Lunch: Split pea soup (leftover from Monday) with some kind of muffins
Supper: Tuna patties with Wakame,  roasted potato wedges, salad

Thursday:
Lunch: any and all leftovers
Supper: Eggplant lasagna (I have breaded eggplant in the freezer), baked ziti from the freezer for those who won't eat eggplant, Green Vegetable Soup

For snacks, we have muffins (my freezer is well stocked with muffins), banana cakes galore in the freezer, kiwis I picked up for 2 shekels/kg because they are funny shapes, oranges, and some homemade granola; We also have cakes from the kiddush in the freezer if there's any reason to pull out cake!

I truly hope I don't spend more than 50 shekels this week on groceries! Anyone else feel like doing a pantry challenge this week?

Menu for the Week

It's that time of the week again - you know, when I realize that if I don't plan out certain things, we'll just get STUCK!

Among all the other things requiring my attention is our menu planning.

So here' what we're having this week:

Breakfasts: muffins, oatmeal, toast, cereal, fruit

Lunches: Soups, sandwiches, random leftovers

Suppers: Sunday: Shabbat leftovers
Monday: Vegetable-Barley Soup, Fresh whole wheat dinner rolls with butter
Tuesday: Split Pea Soup, ??
Wednesday: Baked Ziti, Salad
Thursday: Spicy Potatoes, Scrambled Eggs, Salad

Of course, this menu is subject to change according to my mood!

What's your menu for the week look like?

Wintery Food - Lots of Stews and Soups

This is supposed to be quite the week here in Israel! Not only are they predicting up to 250mm of rain in my area, they are also expecting winds up 100 km/hr. And snow in the higher elevations!

BRRR

If your house is anything like mine, it has heaters, but it's pretty drafty and nearly impossible to keep warm.

We're piling on the layers, wearing our warmest socks and sweaters (I found some wool-blend socks which do a pretty good job of keeping toes warm), and walking around with steaming hot mugs in our hands.

We're drinking tea and coffee, some hot chocolate, and if I get some apple juice, we'll make mulled mock-cider.

We'll be getting filled up with toasted sandwiches and soups. And stews.

Here are some to try out:

Vegetable Stew with Eggplant and Red Lentils

Lentil Stew

Split Pea Soup

Pumpkin Soup

Chunky Tomato Soup with Rice

Tomato Soup with Black Beans

Minestrone Soup

My Fusion Soup

Traffic Light Soup

Carrot and Red Lentil Soup

Crock Pot Tomato Soup

"Garden" Pea Soup

I hope that helps inspire you to make some soups! Please let me know what YOUR favorites are!

Shabbat Menu

I can't believe it's almost Shabbat again!
The week really flew.

It's pretty incredible how that happens - on Monday you're thinking, "how will I EVER get through this week?" and by Thursday night, you just can't believe how quickly it went!

But that means it's time to cook for Shabbat again!

Here's my plan, I'm hoping that it will keep everyone happy.

Homemade Challah (I'm really low on flour so for the first time in a LONG time I will only make a small batch)

Vegetable soup (found some cheap cabbage this week, so I threw that in the pot to saute with the onions, also used garlic, celery, carrots, and kishuim/summer squash)

Vegetarian Cholent for lunch (DO soak that barley overnight first, it makes such a difference. I don't know why, but it does!)

Chicken - haven't figured out how I'm preparing it yet.

Rice (as usual)

Roasted potatoes (old standby too)

Honey-Cinnamon Oranges

Israeli Salad

Apple Crisp

Are my menus too boring and predictable? I keep coming back to the same old things, because that way I know my kids will eat the food I make! Last week I made roasted red peppers and no one touched them! What can I do?

Tomato Soup with Black Beans and Rice

Today's soup was a variation on tomato soup with rice. It tasted great, and is loaded with nutritious ingredients, so I figured I'd share! You can vary this soup yourself, it is so forgiving.

1 onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 fennel bulb, chopped
3-5 large leaves of cabbage, chopped
Heat 1 T. olive oil in a large soup pot, add the above ingredients, and cook, stirring, till limp and fragrant, but not carmelized.

Add
1 c. brown rice
Stir well

Add:
2 chopped tomatoes
Stir well

Add
water or soup stock (about 8-10 cups)
250 g. (approx) tomato paste
1 c. black beans, cooked and drained
salt, pepper, basil, other herbs to taste

Bring soup to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer till the rice is fully cooked (at least 40 min for brown rice)
Serve hot.
Yum! Yes really there are black beans in there, they are just settling to the bottom of the bowl, so hard to see

Enjoy!

Thursday, December 1, 2011

I've been doing well with the pantry challenge so far - we bought milk (as predicted), bananas (do your kids eat bananas like mine do?), and fresh yeast. And we're keeping a list of all those things we discovered we're out of and we've been making do and improvising!

Tonight we are having another hearty soup! I love serving soup. While cooking, it warms up the kitchen, and while we're eating it, no one is asking me to turn on the heater! (They may ask right before and right after, but not while they are actually eating it!) And if it's a thick soup, it fills everyone up and I can cook fewer dishes and wash fewer dishes, too. Win-win!

So here's the menu:

Homemade dinner rolls

Lentil soup with rice (I'm posting the recipe and pics soon!)

Carrots, cucumbers, green peppers

What's on your table tonight?
