All this for 11 Shekels!

I'm posting about my latest sug bet haul. Yesterday I happened to be near the makolet at the very end of the day, and found they'd put out a fair amount of produce on the "sug bet" - 2 shekel/kilo - rack.

Some of it was rotten. Gross.

But some was really great! And since I'm really not planning to spend much on groceries this week, this was perfect for me! (Except that I didn't have any shopping bags/tote bags with me, because I actually had not planned on shopping... So I had to take a plastic bag, and just my luck, it ripped on the way home...)

Anyway, here's what I got for 11 shekels!

4 kohlrabi
1 (small) butternut squash
10 (small-medium) sweet potatoes
2 large red peppers
1 small red pepper
2 (normal size) green peppers
2 (normal size) yellow peppers 
19 (smallish) kishuim (light green summer squash)

Most of these veggies are in good condition, and I'm not sure why they were set outside, but I was thrilled to find them anyway!

They had other things out there that did not appeal to me as much - like those famous root vegetables - because if I could get THESE for 2 shekels/kilo instead of those, my family is much happier. Not that we don't eat the root vegetables too, because we do. But I decided to skip it for now, in favor of these. Especially without any tote bags...

Sippy Cup Recall

 
Massive sippy cup recall - involving all "Tommy Tippee" Sippy Cups with a removable WHITE valve. The valve can develop a mold problem, especially when washed infrequently.

Food Recall! (Israel)

Hatikvah Smoked Fish announced a major recall, due to the presence of listeria in some of their products (particularly Herring (מטיאס) fillets in oil and Herring Provencal, in 300g packages with expiration dates of 30.6.16 and 11.7.16).

In order to assure public safety, the company is recalling ALL packages of Herring Provencale and Herring Fillets in oil that are currently on stores shelves, with all expiration dates through 12.7.16

This includes those packaged under the "DeliDag" brand and "Hatikvah Smoked Fish" brand.

Consumers are asked NOT to eat these products. Please return them to the store where purchased for a refund/store credit.


 

Free Museum Day - May 26/Lag Ba'Omer

Lag Ba'Omer, May 26, 2016, is International Museum Day in Israel, and there are over 60 museums around Israel open to the public for free!

Many museums on this list are usually quite pricey for a family to visit, but I will warn you now - get there early or risk having the doors closed due to overcrowding!

Menu for the week!

My kids complained that lately I've been neglecting my duties and haven't been posting our weekly menu.

Something about teenage boys always wanting know what the next meal is going to be!

So here's the plan:

Sunday night: Vegetable soup, Brown Rice, Scrambled Eggs, Cucumbers and techina

Monday night: Embellished Shabbat leftovers

Tuesday night: Baked potatoes with various toppings, vegetable sticks with chumus, and Red Lentil Soup

Wednesday night: Homemade dinner rolls with spreads and Minestrone soup

Thursday night: Any leftovers from the week

Lunches - gosh knows what. I have no idea, but I'm sure we'll find something most days!!

Food Recall! (Israel)

Tiv Tirat Tzvi announced a recall of the following product:

Beef Prosciutto, 100g packages, with barcode # 7290013906519, all current expiration dates through 17.10.2016

Routine testing showed that this product contains nitrates in quantities above the legal limit.
The Prosciutto packages are being removed from store shelves.

Consumers who have purchased this products should call Tiv Tirat Tzvi at 1-800-262-728 to receive a replacement.

Free Admission is BACK at Madatech!

Madatech is a Science Museum, located in the Heart of Haifa. It's a pretty decent Science Museum (and we have seen MANY Science Museums in the past 17 years!), and all of my kids (aged 8-17) found things that interested them and kept them busy for our whole day there!

Normally, it's pretty pricey to take a family to Madatech (base price is 340 shekels for a family of 4, and each additional child is 50 shekels), so naturally, when we found out it was free on Wednesdays in February and March, we took a day to go. I wholeheartedly recommend you find a way to go too.

And now, Free Admission is back! Wednesdays in May and part of June are FREE ADMISSION days at Madatech! The deal is good thru June 15, 2016. Free admission is not valid for school groups or other large groups.
Please be aware that on Yom Hazikaron (Wednesday, May 11, 2016) the museum will be CLOSED so please do not plan to go that day; you'll just be disappointed.

Opening hours on Wednesday are 10am - 3pm, so plan accordingly!

Check it out and find a place you've never gone to, and go have fun! In past years we've gone to museums that were free on Yom Haatzmaut, and they was almost completely empty. I think many Israelis prefer their mangal in the park and sitting in traffic. I prefer free admission!
