One carrot grower from Moshav Tzofit is inviting the public to his carrot fields to harvest the carrots he's grown. The market price he's been offered would not offset the cost of paying to harvest the carrots, so now thru Tuesday he's opening his fields to the public for self-picking.
Pick as much as you want, and pay what you want to pay for it.
The farm is located near Kfar Sava on Road 5503.
It will be open to the public between the hours of 8:30am and 4pm (thru Tuesday).
Have fun picking carrots!

Cold Potato Soup (+ carrot recipe)
Searching for something to do with 5 boiled potatoes that were hanging around my fridge, I checked out MANY, many recipes for cold soup.
In the end, I decided to combine the potatoes (and their cooking liquid) with some pan roasted onions, and the leftover cooked carrots from yesterday's carrot experiment (I can't help it. Carrots are cheap, so I keep buying and serving them, but everyone is getting bored of eating them. I cut the carrots into "coins" and pan roasted them in my cast iron pan with a little oil, then added a mixture of honey, ginger, garlic, and teriyaki sauce, and reduced. I thought it was tasty, and most of my kids ate it...)
So here's how I turned it into soup:
5 med. size potatoes, boiled
cooking liquid from potatoes
1/2 c. pan roasted, carmelized onions
1 c. cooked carrots (these were seasoned as mentioned above, but I'm sure you could do this with plain ones, too)
Combine in a bowl, and puree using an immersion blender. Or use a food processor and process in batches.
Add salt and pepper to taste. If you need to thin it down, you can add a bit more water.
Serve cold.

Carrot and Red Lentil Soup
Today's menu was focused on easy:
I had a bit of vegetable soup left from Shabbat, but not enough to stretch for the whole family, so that served as a basis for my soup:
Carrot and Red Lentil soup (2 onions, diced, 2 cloves garlic, diced, 1 potato, diced, 5-6 carrots, diced. heat olive oil (1 T.?) in soup pot, add diced veggies, and cook, stirring often, for about 10 min. Add 2 c. red lentils, sorted and rinsed, soup stock - and leftover vegetable soup!, and season to taste. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10-15 min. till the lentils are all soft. Serve hot)
Whole Wheat Couscous (I love that this is like instant food, but still wholesome!)
Sliced Tomatoes
Veggie hot dogs (gasp! I bought them on sale and my kids love them so I serve them once every couple weeks) with ketchup. My kids won't put them in buns, so no bread.

We are down to the wire! Moving day is very soon and I'm behind schedule.
Tonight's supper plan takes into account that since it's so hot, I have given in and we're running the a/c.
Took stock of the contents of my kitchen, and here's what we'll have:
Pitot with cheese (toasted, cut into triangles, perfect for little hands to hold)
Barley, Rice, Lentils, and Mushrooms in the crockpot (put it all in the crockpot in the morning, with water to cover, and season to taste. I generally use salt, pepper, garlic powder, and oregano)
Cucumber and Carrot sticks
Watermelon
What's your dinner plan?

Pesach is getting closer! How's your pantry challenge coming along?
I rummaged through the freezer, and my produce and here's what I pulled together tonight:
Vegetable soup (I even used the pureed cauliflower in it! Also used some of that 1 NIS/kilo cabbage in it!)
Fish Sticks (bought these a while ago, and though they are not healthy and not frugal, I occasionally serve them because some of my kids like them!)
Spicy Roast Potatoes
Cheesy Garlic Bread
Carrot Sticks

Oops! The day flew by; we were doing some major clean up and organization projects! At least I can look at the playroom and know that it is organized and we threw out LOTS of junk that had accumulated. I promised myself that I will not allow the children to buy any more toys from the shekel store again! It's just destined for the garbage, so let them keep it, and let me keep my hard-earned shekels!
Anyhow, quick supper plan for tonight:
Breakfast for supper! (Can you tell this is just for me and the kids? Hubby is coming home late...)
Oatmeal - I said I had to use up the oats I have on hand!
Toast with peanut butter and jelly
Yogurt, Cheese, etc
Carrot Sticks, Cucumber sticks

Monday Night, March 7, 2011
I have been a little nutty lately, and I'm afraid I'm going to find myself back in a food rut if I don't watch out. My children may be happy eating macaroni & cheese or pizza day in and day out, but I just need more variety!
(The trouble is, that also requires more time, and I'm feeling a little overtaxed right now.)
So tonight we'll be having:
Citrus fruits (we have a couple of oranges, clementimes, and grapefruits hanging out in the fridge. time to use them up!)
French toast (I just noticed the leftover challah sitting on the kitchen table, asking to be used and not thrown out...) We eat this with the crazy expensive real maple syrup I splurged on one day. I cannot bring myself to put high fructose corn syrup and food coloring on my family's plates. that just isn't food...
Scrambled Eggs or Omelettes
Carrot and Cucumber Sticks
Hopefully this will satisfy my crew, and not be too labor intensive! I'm trying to get organized so that by the time I have to clean for Pesach things will be more manageable. (Trouble is, some things came off the lift and got shoved into a corner, and never found a real home and certainly never got organized!)
