Tuesday Night, July 26, 2011

We are down to the wire! Moving day is very soon and I'm behind schedule.

Tonight's supper plan takes into account that since it's so hot, I have given in and we're running the a/c.

Took stock of the contents of my kitchen, and here's what we'll have:

Pitot with cheese (toasted, cut into triangles, perfect for little hands to hold)

Barley, Rice, Lentils, and Mushrooms in the crockpot (put it all in the crockpot in the morning, with water to cover, and season to taste. I generally use salt, pepper, garlic powder, and oregano)

Cucumber and Carrot sticks

Watermelon

What's your dinner plan?

Tuesday Night, July 19, 2011

Post-fast menu... this should be interesting. The pickings around here are getting pretty slim!

Here's what I can improvise:

Pita crisps

Mushroom Quiche

Pesto infused roast potato wedges (I only have a couple of potatoes)

Couscous (as an alternative to the potatoes!)

Sliced cucumbers

Here's a last minute menu - I found myself haphazardly throwing together supper.

Pitot with cheese melted in them
P'titim (whole wheat ones)
Savory Pancakes made with some leftover gevinah levana that needed to get used
Cucumbers

I find that the less time I spend on meal preparation, the more my kids will eat it. Go figure!

Sunday, June 12, 2011

Here's an "after-the-fact" post. (It's late already!)

Tonight's supper:

Fruit & Yogurt smoothies

Sloppy Sams with Pitot

Cucumbers and Pickles

Somehow,  this turned out to be enough. Goes to show that sometimes it's simpler to offer fewer choices...

Looking forward to a no-fuss week!

Shabbat Parashat B'ha'alotcha, June 10-11, 2011

Assuming I can breathe tomorrow, I'll cook for Shabbat... (I'm having something of an asthma flare-up which was exacerbated by smoke in the air from a nearby brush fire today, and I'm trying very hard to avoid the emergency room. Good luck to me...)

Here's the plan:

Some sort of cold soup (help!)

Chicken with date honey (again. trying to use up the date honey)

Barley with mushrooms

Roasted Zucchini

Fresh tomatoes and cucumbers

Baked Potatoes

Fruit for dessert

Thursday night, May 12, 2011

This week is flying by! I can hardly believe tomorrow is Thursday already. There is still so much to do, it's actually a REALLY good thing that I don't have to cook for Shabbat this week! (Yes, you read that right, I won't be posting my Shabbat menu, since I am not making one! Of course, this is good, and this is bad. I do not trust other people's cooking. There, I said it. You see, I am skeptical about other people's ingredients - what kind of oils do they use, do they use whole grains, do they use soup mix with MSG?!)

Anyhow, it's Thursday night, which in our house ALWAYS means pizza night. And since we still have so many cucumbers, we'll be eating those! Oh, and perhaps we'll make some home-fries (homemade french fries, cut thick, with the peels left on...) because my children love the junky combination of pizza and french fries, and perhaps I'll indulge them. Or maybe not, since after all, they'll likely eat junky food all of Shabbat... I can't decide. What would you do?:

Post-Pesach

Well, we worked late into the night motzaei pesach and got everything back in order, more or less. (Still don't have a place for my beautiful turquoise Dutch oven to call home though. It is sitting, quite unceremoniously, under the kitchen table again. So sad.)

Today, everybody just wanted bread and cookies, and crackers too. Somehow though, my little girls were still willing to eat the leftover Pesachdik baked goods!

So I sent my hubby to the store and he came back with tons of chametz, including a couple of long, fresh, baguettes.

Here's what we had for supper:

Pizza baguettes (made with homemade tomato sauce - see the "Homemade Alternatives" page for my super easy, cheater recipe)  - My oldest child suggested we also make a couple of matzah pizzas - he was feeling nostalgic. We skipped the matzah pizzas.

Fingerling potatoes with ketchup (over Pesach, I discovered that my children who do NOT eat potatoes all eagerly eat fingerling potatoes! very interesting discoveries...)

Sliced cucumbers

Sunday Night, March 27, 2011

Oops! The day flew by; we were doing some major clean up and organization projects! At least I can look at the playroom and know that it is organized and we threw out LOTS of junk that had accumulated. I promised myself that I will not allow the children to buy any more toys from the shekel store again! It's just destined for the garbage, so let them keep it, and let me keep my hard-earned shekels!

Anyhow, quick supper plan for tonight:
Breakfast for supper! (Can you tell this is just for me and the kids? Hubby is coming home late...)

Oatmeal - I said I had to use up the oats I have on hand!
Toast with peanut butter and jelly
Yogurt, Cheese, etc
Carrot Sticks, Cucumber sticks

Monday Night, March 7, 2011

I have been a little nutty lately, and I'm afraid I'm going to find myself back in a food rut if I don't watch out. My children may be happy eating macaroni & cheese or pizza day in and day out, but I just need more variety!

(The trouble is, that also requires more time, and I'm feeling a little overtaxed right now.)

So tonight we'll be having:

Citrus fruits (we have a couple of oranges, clementimes, and grapefruits hanging out in the fridge. time to use them up!)

French toast (I just noticed the leftover challah sitting on the kitchen table, asking to be used and not thrown out...) We eat this with the crazy expensive real maple syrup I splurged on one day. I cannot bring myself to put high fructose corn syrup and food coloring on my family's plates. that just isn't food...

Scrambled Eggs or Omelettes

Carrot and Cucumber Sticks

Hopefully this will satisfy my crew, and not be too labor intensive! I'm trying to get organized so that by the time I have to clean for Pesach things will be more manageable. (Trouble is, some things came off the lift and got shoved into a corner, and never found a real home and certainly never got organized!)
