Mislabeled Cottage Cheese

Sorry for getting to this late - I've been SO busy lately!

This announcement is from Tnuva:

A small number of containers of 9% fat cottage cheese were packaged in containers labeled 3% fat.
Product Information: Tnuva Cottage Cheese, 9% fat
Barcode: 7290004127366
Expiration date: 6.8.17

The product is safe to consume. The lids of the mispackaged cheeses correctly identify the product as 9% fat Cottage Cheese, even though the containers they are packaged in are labeled 3% fat. So you can identify these mislabled cheeses by the confusing packaging.

If you have any questions about this, please call Tnuva customer service at 1-800-666-244

Refunds for Cottage Cheese and Gevinah Levanah

Significant weight discrepancies have been found!

If you've recently purchased Tnuva brand cottage cheese or gevina levana (white cheese) in 125g ("personal size") containers, you may be due a refund.

After a recent investigation, in which it was revealed that the 125g cups on the market right now weigh much less than they should, Tnuva has announced a program to compensate customers for the error.

Customers who have these products in their refrigerators with an expiration date of all dates thru 26.7 should call Tnuva's customer service hotline at 1-800-666-244 to request compensation.

Tuesday Nov 22, 2011

I THOUGHT I would just make pizza baguettes and salad and call that supper tonight, with those 2 NIS baguettes from Mega, but alas, I did not make it to Mega. By the time the heater repair tech finished, it was getting dark and I was no longer looking forward to walking over there!

So - it will have to be pushed off until tomorrow or Thursday.

Here's my thrown together supper:

Potato Bourekas (I still had a frozen package from the last time I found a decent sale

Savory Cottage Cheese Pancakes - these are made of eggs, cottage cheese, flour, and spices.

Green lentils prepared with onion, garlic, and red pepper

What are you serving up?

Food Prices

I've been pondering ways to lower the grocery bill. The drop in cottage cheese prices is only a drop in the bucket (perhaps I don't buy as much cottage cheese as the average Israeli family), so I've been looking at other ways.
And I'll be taking on that project quite seriously once we're settled in the new house.

For now, I'll just share that I think it's interesting that an olive oil company is petitioning the government to lower the regulated price of olive oil! (Without pressure from consumers, as far as I know -  I haven't heard of an olive oil boycott, have you?)
Check it out!

What's the best price you've seen lately on extra virgin olive oil? I haven't needed to buy any but I did notice Mega has some on sale for somewhere in the vicinity of 29 shekel for a 1 liter bottle (it's their store brand. I don't know if it's domestic or imported, as I didn't buy it.).

Working on the pantry challenge... I'm having a hard time with this right now. I have so many little odds and ends left in the freezer that I'm not sure what to do... Right now I am focused mostly on the fridge, but I'll try to find ways to use the freezer stash as well.

Tonight, we're going to have:

Minestrone Soup (found a few small containers of leftover minestrone from other times. If it's not enough to go around, I'll add a few more veggies and  no one will be the wiser. The real question is, can I mix in the pureed cauliflower that stares me in the face every time I open the freezer?!)

Baked potatoes (actually, not sure if we really need these; maybe I'll rummage through the freezer and find something to use up! I'm afraid some of my labels rubbed off and I'm left with mystery food... does that ever happen to you?)

Cottage Cheese pancakes (we like these slightly salty. mix cottage cheese, eggs, flour, salt, and pepper. cook in a skillet just like pancakes)

Make-your-own-salad

Let me know if you're also doing a pantry challenge. How's it going?

Wednesday night - March 2, 2011

I had a really busy day yesterday and the afternoon flew past me. So the kids and I decided together to just have pitot topped with olives and tomatoes, with cheese melted on top. I steamed some broccoli to get everyone to eat something green.

So for Wednesday, I'm planning a little better (I'm ok with my fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants dinner, after all, everyone needs to just take care of other things sometimes!)...

Minestrone Soup - since I use such a variety of veggies in my minestrone soup, I think I can sneak some of that cabbage into it without being noticed. And to my son who reads this blog - please don't tell your brother and sisters!

Broccoli Puff - this is a simple mixture of chopped broccoli, cottage cheese, shredded cheese, eggs, a little flour, salt and pepper, baked up till it's golden brown on top. Yummy, a favorite in this house!

Tomato & Mozzarella Salad - my kids love mozzarella cheese, so I just slice up tomatoes, drizzle with olive oil, and add some chunks of mozzarella and some fresh (or dried) basil. You can keep this frugal by using small chunks of cheese, and not so much. Really tomatoes are the star of this salad!

Spicy Roasted Potatoes - Mix olive oil with mustard, garlic powder, and ground black pepper. Cut potatoes into wedges and coat with olive oil/mustard mixture. Roast in a 400 F oven till crispy, golden brown. The kids like to dip them in ketchup....
