Book Recommendation

(This post contains affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission if you click and make a purchase. Thanks for your support!)

Recently, a friend and neighbor published a book in Hebrew - fiction, paranormal... Something I might pick up if it was in English. But I didn't read it, because I still never got over the hurdle of reading for pleasure in Hebrew.

But now, she's had it translated, and it's available in English!

It looks really interesting, and since I think she's a very creative person, I'm sure it's like nothing I've ever read before.

So let's all check out The House of Lost Spirits! It's available for Kindle with a super low price right now, or you can buy the paperback (my preference is paperback, because I like to physically turn pages when I'm reading a book)!

Enjoy!

Trial Magazine Subscriptions (starting at 10 shekels)

This post contains affiliate links. I may receive a commission if you click a link and make a purchase. Thanks in advance for your support!

UPDATED February 11, 2018 - You can still take advantage of these deals!

One way I get my kids to read is to find magazines they enjoy. They love the "sound byte" effect of short articles with glossy pages that don't require hours and hours to get through, especially with Hebrew reading (as olim, don't we all struggle with enjoying our Hebrew reading sometimes?). With magazines, they can read an article in a short time, put it down, and come back later.

Right now, as we start 2018, I'm pleased to share a bunch of deals with you that will allow you to check out some magazines for your kids (in Hebrew) for just 10 nis!

Pod Kipod - this magazine is intended for beginning readers. You'll get 2 issues for 10nis, plus a free gift!

Zebang Comic books - comic books get a bad rap, but really ANYTHING that gets kids reading improves literacy! So don't knock the comic books! The Zebang comics have been read by Israeli kids for the past 20 years! You'll get 2 issues for 10nis!

Gaolaso (formerly SuperGoal) is a soccer (football) magazine - so if your kids are sports fans, get them reading about what they love! Your trial subscription comes with a poster and those popular cards, too!

Maariv for Children + National Geographic Kids is a great magazine for young scientists! You'll also get Maariv for kids with this trial subscription!

Maariv for Teens is a magazine written and photographed by and for teens, and has been for over 60 years! You'll get 4 issues with your trial subscription!

I am going to assume that these deals are only available for delivery to Israeli addresses.

Happy magazine reading!

Amazing Reading Resource!

I know so many English speakers in Israel struggle to find reading material for their kids. Many of us live in out of the way towns with small libraries and tiny English language sections (I really should take a picture of the 4 tiny shelves of kids books in English we have in our library!).

And downloading Kindle books can get really expensive.

Lucky for all of you out there, and anyone, really, who wants access to more childrens books, I just found this amazing resource, Farfaria, that people are calling the "Netflix of kids' books"! And it's available right now for $19.99 (regular price is $39.99, you'll save 50%!), and works on both Android and iOS.

It's great for when you want to encourage your child to develop their English reading fluency! There is a "read to me" option, or a read alone option, and this program has some really great features. Generally, the age range is 2-9, so the books are for beginning readers.

I'm sure you're going to love it!

But hurry! This deal ends soon!

Ode to my Kindle

I love having Kindles.
My reading-all-the-time-son loves having a Kindle.
My other son loves having a Kindle.
We really love reading and Kindle has changed our lives...

And I've even downloaded the Kindle e-reader to several other devices that are not Kindles.

Amazon.com - Read eBooks using the FREE Kindle Reading App on Most Devices

You see, I pretty much stalk the Kindle store for books that I think I'll like, or that I think my kids will like, or that are relevant to our current learning projects (right now we are focused on art and dance, can you tell it's just the girls at home right now?)... and I snatch things when they are on sale or free.

So, I highly recommend downloading the Kindle app for your tablet or pc or possibly even your phone, and get tons of reading material.

Unless you aren't a book junkie. I AM a book junkie.

I guess if you're not, you can always get the new Amazon Fire TV! (It's even on sale right now for $15 off) But it does say some services are not available outside the US, so if you don't live in the USA, please check carefully before buying.

Free kids' digital magazines (summer promo!)

We love the Cricket family of magazines.

Not only are they ad-free, they are high quality, interesting, engaging, and all around perfect for my curious kids who love to read! There are so many of them - each with a different focus and on various reading levels.

This year, we bought 5 subscriptions and the kids were thrilled with the digital versions! They read and reread them. They discuss and debate them. They enter contests and send in comments.

And one of my kids is so proud that his note was published in one of the editions!
(Look in the picture - he marked his submission! I guess those are his 15 seconds...)

I recently found out that they have made their summer editions available for free, for anyone to try.

To sign up for your free editions, check out Cricket's summer reading page.

Enjoy!
