"Whole Wheat" Bread info

When you go to the store and buy a loaf of bread, you might be looking for a healthy option. Many people look for the code words "Whole Wheat" or "Whole Grain" on the package.

So.. what exactly is in that loaf of whole wheat bread?

Did you know that your loaf can be labeled whole grain as long as 80% of the flour in it is whole grain? (meaning, up to 20% of the flour used in baking the bread can be something other than whole wheat!)

Okay, so now we know that whole wheat bread is 80% whole wheat bread.


 
IF your bread has the "Efshari-Bari" label on it, the following also apply:

• maximum sodium content is 400mg per 100g of bread

• maximum caloric value is 250 calories per 100g of bread.

There are no other actual regulations about what goes into it, so you'll want to check the ingredients - some breads contain few ingredients (simpler food) and others contain a whole list of about 20 items (often additives, preservatives, stabilizers, and sugars). Some breads are made with liquid oils, and others are made with partially hydrogenated oils.

In other words - even when the bread says it's whole wheat, you should probably read the fine print to know what you are getting.

Price Controlled Foods - Updated Prices

The Ministry of Finance announced today that they will be lowering the prices of price controlled dairy products and eggs. The new prices are listed below. As soon as they announce what day these prices will go into effect (sometime this week), I will post an update here!

They are also trying to find a way to add basic fruits and vegetables to the "basket" of price controlled foods. I will update you if this happens!

The prices listed below are the MAXIMUM prices for the specified items - in theory, a store can discount it further, if they want to.
If a store is selling price controlled items for a higher price, they are in violation of the law. You can (and should) report these violations!

Here are the items that are supervised, and the maximum price to consumers:

PRICE UPDATE for price controlled foods

I'm sure you're familiar with the list of foods that price controlled in this country - for better or for worse, certain products have maximum prices set by the government.

The list includes breads, milk, cheeses, eggs, salt, and more. If you regularly buy these products, it may save you money to buy the "price controlled" version. Usually other non-price controlled versions are sold, as well. Check and decide what works best for your family.

I wanted to let you all know thaton Oct 1, VAT went down 1%, from 18% to 17%, so the legal maximum prices have been updated to reflect that change.
