BUT...

Today and tomorrow ONLY, they have a great sale, so I figured I'd let y'all know about it!

Let me know if you find this sale worthwhile!

KCC- Kosher Cooking Carnival for Elul

I'm a bit late, but I'm hosting this month's Kosher Cooking Carnival, where we highlight posts from Kosher food-related bloggers from around the world.

I only got a few submissions, so it's going to be a rather short list.

We'd love for this Blog Carnival to grow, so those bloggers out there who want to be included, please join the KCC group on Facebook so you know how to submit your posts in the future!

Wishing everyone an uplifting, fulfilling month of Elul ahead of us.

Here's the Carnival:

Batya tells us about her quest for an inexpensive salad in Jerusalem

Chavivah shares her healthy take on Chocolate pudding

Pragmatic Attic brings us  Zatilas, a Kurdish filled flat bread

Doug brings us Four New Beers

I've posted a really colorful, refreshing summer salad

So check 'em out and leave comments for these bloggers, and spread the word about the KCC!

Shabbat Menu!

YAY!
My family will be reunited for Shabbat (B'ezrat Hashem)!

My husband and the two boys have been away for about a week and a half.

The girls and I have managed pretty well, but it's been rather quiet around here.

Anyhow, looking forward to a fun, peaceful, meaningful (and probably jet-lagged) Shabbat together this week!

Here's the menu:

Fresh Challot
Vegetable Soup with noodles
Chicken Wings (one pan with honey-teriyaki sauce, one pan with garlic and herbs)
Oven-friend Shnitzel
Rice
Potato Kugel
Corn on the Cob
Salad (I'm putting together lettuce, red pepper, avocado, cucumber, mango, sunflower seeds, and dried cranberries)

Dessert will be fruit, marble cake, and assorted cookies

Seudah Shlishit is not yet planned. We'll figure something out!

What are your shabbat plans this week?

Ode to my Kindle

I love having Kindles.
My reading-all-the-time-son loves having a Kindle.
My other son loves having a Kindle.
We really love reading and Kindle has changed our lives...

And I've even downloaded the Kindle e-reader to several other devices that are not Kindles.

Amazon.com - Read eBooks using the FREE Kindle Reading App on Most Devices

You see, I pretty much stalk the Kindle store for books that I think I'll like, or that I think my kids will like, or that are relevant to our current learning projects (right now we are focused on art and dance, can you tell it's just the girls at home right now?)... and I snatch things when they are on sale or free.

So, I highly recommend downloading the Kindle app for your tablet or pc or possibly even your phone, and get tons of reading material.

Unless you aren't a book junkie. I AM a book junkie.

I guess if you're not, you can always get the new Amazon Fire TV! (It's even on sale right now for $15 off) But it does say some services are not available outside the US, so if you don't live in the USA, please check carefully before buying.

Pretty Salad!

Pretty Salad!

I made this bright salad to go with our supper tonight.
We had gotten a whole bunch of really well priced, amazing mangoes this week, and they were calling my name!

All I did was slice cucumbers, red peppers, and mango and toss in a pretty bowl.
I'm offering sunflower seeds as a garnish, as well as balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing.

And that is it, because it's the height of the season and fresh fruits and vegetables taste pretty amazing right now.

Just wondering if my kids will eat this though! Anyone want to guess how many will agree to eat it?

p.s. here are the rolls I made for tonight, using a slightly modified version of my sandwich bread recipe:

Menu Plan for the week!

Last week I didn't plan out my menu very well, so my meals were haphazard and all over the place. Not *such* a terrible thing, especially in the summer, as long as everyone was able to eat! So, despite not planning well, we managed!

But I figured I can do better. So here's the plan for this week (no idea if I will actually stick with it) --

Lunches: Sandwiches, Stuffed baked potatoes, pancakes, and salads

Suppers:
Sunday: Embellished Shabbat Leftovers
Monday: Baked Ziti and salad
Tuesday: Sloppy Sams on homemade dinner rolls (using my favorite bread recipe), salad
Wednesday: Quick pizzas, home-fries, carrot sticks
Thursday: Leftovers from the week

Snacks: fruit (I'll have to keep looking for fruit deals!), popcorn, muffins, granola cookies

Do you like to plan your meals for the week?
I'd love to hear your menu!

Recall - Allergen Warning!

Announcement for Nut Allergy Sufferers:

Today, Strauss announced a recall of the chocolate bar "Tortit" produced under the Badatz Megadim label.

The allergy warning "may contain nuts (hazelnuts, walnuts, pecans, pistachios)" was left off the label. The affected product has barcode # 7290106521612, and a best by date of 1/12/14 and 15/9/14 (only those dates).

While the product is being recalled from store shelves to correct the mistake, Strauss said the product is perfectly fine for people without a nut allergy to eat, but warned nut allergy sufferers to avoid the product.

Consumers who purchased this product are asked to call customer service at 1-800-777-777 with questions and to arrange a replacement if necessary.

Please share with your friends who may need to know about this recall!

Vegan (Eggless!) Broccoli Kugel

Ok, it's not the most frugal food in the world, but once in a while we eat broccoli kugel. Especially when I can manage to get broccoli for about 12 shekels/bag!

bought this for 12.90
And we love broccoli kugel, which posed a huge problem when we stopped eating egg based foods, since my old recipe was very egg-y. I adapted it, and came up with this vegan version.

Let me know if you give it a try!

(sorry, no pic of the finished product, I ran out of time, I'll try to get one next time I pull out the broccoli!)

Recipe:

4 Tablespoons ground flaxseed
2.5 cups boiling water
1/2 cup corn starch
1 cup flour
salt, pepper, garlic powder/granulated garlic, parsley flakes to taste
1 bag frozen broccoli (800 g), thawed and ideally chopped

Optional topping:
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 tsp salt
dash of pepper

Combine flaxseed and water in mixing bowl and allow to cool. mix in dry ingredients.

Arrange broccoli in a large baking pan. Pour batter over broccoli. Sprinkle topping over it, if desired.
Bake in 200C oven for 45 min - hr or until as done as you like it.

Enjoy!
